Sustainable Production Resources

Viaplay Group works with our suppliers to develop sustainable production practices. Our sustainable production program consists of several initiatives working in concert:

  • Sustainable production guide – an open-source resource which establishes a process for integrating sustainability into any production using a series of tools and a tracking system
  • Tools & trainings – resources to up-skill producers in measuring, setting science-based targets and reducing emissions
  • Production work-environment screenings & on-site sustainability audits – system for ensuring health & safety, human rights and that work-environments in productions are aligned with our values and rules of business conduct

Sustainable Production Guide

Viaplay Group works to support sustainable production practices in all of its productions and across the industry, we have developed our Sustainable Production Guide in order to provide a structured way to evaluate the sustainability of a production and we share it externally so others can use the system for productions made in other contexts.

The Sustainable Production Guide outlines a process for integrating climate action & best practice work environment policies into productions of all types and sizes, and defines Viaplay Group’s approach to People and Planet conscious storytelling.

Sustainable Production Principles

To support production companies in creating a work environment aligned with Viaplay Group values, we ensure that everyone involved in any Viaplay Group production is aware of our Sustainable Production Principles.

These principles are a set of guidelines outlining how everyone should to treat each other and the environment during a production, which also share information on appropriate whistleblower channels run by an independent third party in the event participants feel anything is not the way it should be.

Climate impact of streaming

In 2021, Viaplay Group took part in a pioneering research project and study together with Netflix, the BBC and the University of Bristol. The study, commissioned by the Carbon Trust and DIMPACT, showed that in Europe, streaming one hour of video produced the same amount of average emissions as popping four bags of popcorn in the microwave – indicating that streaming has a low carbon footprint. It also revealed that most emissions from streaming came from the end-user devices, rather than distribution of content. In fact, devices such as TVs, laptops/PCs, smartphones and tablets, accounted for more than half of streaming’s carbon emissions, compared with other components in the value chain such as data centres or internet infrastructure. Viaplay Group also published its own report entitled “Viaplay Group, streaming and the climate: 2021”, which highlighted the Group's climate impact and work it is doing to reduce emissions across the entire streaming value chain.

Viaplay Group continues to work to reduce the environmental impact of its streaming value-chain and through collaborative industry efforts such as DIMPACT to have a wider impact on the ICT industry. For more information how we work with climate issues see our most recent Annual & Sustainability report.
